What Is Blogging?
A Blog is a record of your thoughts, opinions, or experiences that you put on the internet for other people to read.
To simply put, Blogging is everything or anything you put out or published on the internet for other people to see or read.
Who Is Blogging For?
Blogging is for anyone, yes you heard me right – for anyone who has the interest or passion to write and have the understanding of how to make engaging content.
If you have ideas about how blogging works, you can start one of your own blogs instantly.
Can You Really Make Money By Blogging?
Yes, you can. Bloggers can earn between $200 – $3,000 a month on average by monetizing their blogs. Some Big name bloggers earn as much as $100,000 per month! Waaa! The sky is the limit.
You can make money by placing ads, affiliate product links or it can be your own product, offering services, and assistance to others, advertising with Google Ads. You can utilize your blog in many ways!
You need to understand a bit about SEO (search engine optimization)- you will find SEO guides and tutorials on Google, YouTube, Blogs.
The most important thing is that your content should be of good quality and give value to the readers and that is what Google wants and looks for.
The quality of your blog and how much traffic you generate is what matters for earning through blogs.
The way to make money by blogging is to find the problems and providing practical solutions to those problems.
Steps To Start A Blog Post
1. Pick A Niche
A Niche is something that is suitable for someone, especially one that they like.
Many people emphasize picking a niche or topic that you have an interest in or are passionate about because you need to be consistently posting content relating to the topic you choose.
If you blog about something that you love, your readers will feel your passion too.
However, what if you write about something that doesn’t have a scope for marketing at all? Like sharing your adventures in Disneyland. You might have many followers and readers but you have to depend only on ads to monetize your blog and it will take a long time.
If you are reading this, then I know either you want to start a blog, or you already started blogging but it didn’t take off as you expect it to be.
Either way, your purpose is to make money, right? So, I won’t keep you running around the bush and waste your time nor mine!
I blog because I want to make money. Yes, I want to make a living out of my blogs!
For me, reading and writing have been a passion that I am unable to quench because even before my schooling starts, books are my passion.
When I was in Grade-I, I read the whole of a small booklet of the English Dictionary to improve my vocabularies! Till my adulthood, not even a single piece of paper was thrown or taken without my permission at my home!
Writing and reading become a part of my life. Well, this might not be the case with everyone. Each one of us has our own passion in life.
You see, when you are passionate about things, there are sparks and liveliness in the way you talk about it. You are more than eager to share with everyone. So, it is easier to get a warm connection with other people.
But… even if it’s not your passion, you can still start your own blog and be successful BECAUSE the secret to making money blogging is talking about what people want and search for and giving them the solutions to the problems!
You can pick any niche topic on what your readers want and looks for, and be specific – See the problems and give solutions. Of course, you have to do your own research first.
You can’t just put out copy-paste pages or crabs. You have to read books and topics about what you want to blog about. Collect as much information as you could.
You need to understand it and then create your blog which is different and with originality (if possible). That’s it!
Once again, don’t worry If it’s not perfect, and you’ll never find it perfect either.
It’s perfectly alright as long as you give valuable information that solves the problems of your readers.
So, the question arises – How do you pick a niche topic?
The following are the Evergreen Niche Topics that are never out-dated and are needed in our daily lives.
- Finance and Wealth
- Health and Fitness
- Working from home
- Personal Development
- Diet and Nutrition
These niches can be further broken down into smaller/micro niches that focus on only one particular topic or thing.
For Example: The Health and Fitness niche is very broad and competition is very high (means- many other people are on this niche), you can pick a sub-niche for something like How To Lose Weight By Simple Exercises and so on…
Focus your blog only on the many simple and easy to do on the go, no special preparations needed exercises you could come upon, how these exercises work, how they burn the body fat and help to lose weight, and so on. You got my point!
Or it can be about Gardening. Understand what gardening is all about, how to start with gardening, the difficulties you may be facing, tools you must have for gardening, and so on…
In the end, you might come out with maybe 35 or 40 different pages about gardening.
Someone looking for gardening solutions came upon your site, find it helpful, and share with other people. Gradually, your visitors increase in numbers.
However, you need to understand all these won’t happen overnight! If you are consistent with great quality content, your blog will gain momentum with time.
2. Get A Domain Name And Web Hosting
There are some free platforms like WordPress.com (WordPress.org is not the same site as WordPress.com even if the name looks familiar), Blogger, Medium, Wix, etc where you can start your blogging journey.
The benefit is that your blog can be seen by many people too if your content is of great value.
Many bloggers used these platforms and you would find many people advising you to use these platforms.
To be honest, free offers always come with limitations and you never know what is going to happen next! And they come with the site extension name along with yours. That is, you won’t be having ‘yourwebsite.com’ name only!
Let me explain…
I don’t want to take any risk on all my hard work and energy. To see one day, that my site is blocked or is taken down without any warning or notification? Because I am using a free platform that I have no control of? And why should you take the risk too?
If you are using free platforms, you have no right over your site. You have to follow whatever rights the site provider imposed!
If you are serious about starting a blog, then I would recommend you to purchase your own domain name and web hosting.
If you are just starting, then I would recommend you to use either Bluehost, SiteGround, or Hostgator for domain registration and web hosting. I do my website hostings with SiteGround and Bluehost. They also provide a free SSL Certificate.
To choose from the three, I would prefer Siteground over others though the renewal price is high, the customer service, website back-up, loading time, etc. you will get are unmatched with other providers. That’s my personal experience.
I am not saying this for the commission… heck, Siteground gave lesser commission than Bluehost even, gave a very little discount. But as I have tried my hosting with Bluehost too, I can see the difference between the two.
Whatever web host you choose, make sure SSL is provided free otherwise you need to buy one and they are not that cheap either.
Domain: A domain is your identity on the Web. It is a naming system that allows people to easily navigate the servers and web pages.
It is like your Home Address.
Example : .com, .org, .info, etc.
Web Hosting: A web host or web hosting is a business that provided the services needed for the website or web page to be viewed on the internet.
It is where the websites are hosted or stored on special computers called Servers.
To make it simple, a Web host is like the physical location of your home address (the land).
I would strongly recommend you not buy a domain name alone because you need hosting for that domain and if you buy it separately, you have to pay for registration and stuff like that.
This is the basic requirement even if you don’t enroll yourself in any course or program.
The greater number of years you opt for, the greater your discount price will be!
I would recommend you go for the unlimited sites as it will help you save money in the future as you need not spend more bucks for upgrading your plan.
3. How To Choose A Domain Name
You can choose and use any name or word as your domain name.
Check out these points to choose a good domain name :
- Make it easy to type and remember – Having a catchy and memorable domain name that is easy to spell it out and say is essential.
- Use keywords and phrases that people search for as it helps in improving your ranking in the search engine.
- If the domain name you want is already taken, adding simple words like ‘a’, ‘my’ or ‘the’ might help.
- Keep it simple – As far as a domain name is concerned, the more simple and descriptive is your domain name, the more people will find it easier to relate to what they want when they search for anything. So, keep your domain name simple. If possible, don’t use complex words.
- Target your area – If your business is local, you can include the name of your city or state in it specifically.
- Avoid numbers and hyphens – Hyphens and numbers are often misunderstood because people who hear your website address might not know if it’s a numeric number or a word or they can misplace or forget the hyphens.
- Use an appropriate domain name extensions – extension like .com is the easiest to remember. You can use .info if your website is about information, or .org if it’s for an organization, .biz for business, and so on.
4. How To Set Up Web Hosting With Your Domain
Setting up a Web hosting is easy even for a non-techie person even though it is a bit more practical and needs steps which can be explained well with the instructions given in the web hosting itself.
Follow the instructions as shown and your website will be live within minutes.
If you are completely new and have no knowledge about the website at all, you might not be clear with the instructions, I would suggest you check out those tutorials available on YouTube.
What you need to do is just input what you exactly want to know in the YouTube search button and you will see there are many tutorial videos that will show you how to do it exactly, step by step.
Make sure to check out the year when the video was uploaded in the video description in order to watch the latest ones.
And don’t lose heart if you couldn’t get it right the first few times, it’s okay. I literally installed my WordPress ten times before I get it right! That is how expert I am (lol).
NOTE: If you are creating more than one website with WordPress, you can use the same username.
Don’t feel overwhelmed! If I can do it, so can you! Even much better!
5. Finding The Right Keyword Title
Since they are free you won’t be getting the search volume or any figure. But, as a rule of thumb, the keywords on the top has the highest searched volume.
Researching your title keyword might take you a bit of time, but it is worth it because that will help you rank higher in search engines.
You can check out 5 Ways To Improve Your Business Blog which talked about how to do keyword research for free for better SEO.
6. Start Writing
After you set up your website with WordPress, what is left is to start writing!
You can do keyword research by creating a free Google Ads account.
Neil Patel’s Uber Suggest is also a very helpful tool. You need not buy any keyword research tools and it’s not necessary unless someone has a very high revenue-generating income with high competition.
Above all, you need to invest your time massively at the beginning. As much as you gave your time for your job or maybe more!
I don’t mean to discourage you in saying this. What I intend to say is you really give efforts to make your blogging works!
It can take a long time and also some money to build and grow a blog because you need high-quality content that is of great value to the readers.
And this blogging thing does work. No doubt about it! Period.
Generally, for a new website with at least 30 pages or more, it took on average 90 weeks to rank in Google unless it is something very specific and high demand site.
However, big authority websites with tons of traffic can even rank as fast as within 24 hours.
You don’t have to be an expert in starting a blog. It doesn’t have to be perfect either.
You can write on any topic that interests you or on those that you have excellent knowledge about.
Originality is the key here. Your ‘Why’ this blog is started should focus on solving the problems and giving values to your readers.
You can search and read those blog posts which are related to your niche and take ideas from them. Do not copy them. Instead, create another post which is much better than what you saw and read.
6 Ways To Write Your Online Content Faster will help you be on the right track without wasting much time.
If you are just starting, do not rush yourself. Take a good amount of time say at least a month or two to research and write your content.
After you are done, proof-read them and also ask a friend or two to read them.
Install Grammarly software which will automatically help you to correct any grammatical errors in your writing. It comes with a Free and Pro version. It really is a real deal and saves time!
The benefit of blogging is that, once you are set and started ranking, you need very little additional work – just updating or improving your content once or twice in 3 months. Yes, you heard me right!
Content Alone is Not the King anymore. What is most important is that YOU MUST UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE.
Your ‘WHY’ you started blogging in the first place should be BASED ON THE NEEDS AND SOLUTIONS OF THE PROBLEMS OF YOUR READERS. Because Your WHY is the only thing that will separate you from the other crowd.
7. Getting Traffic
By traffic, it means people visiting your site. The more traffic you get on your blog, the better chance you have to make money.
You need good traffic to be able to generate a steady income.
So, you need to create more traffic through promotions on social media, word of mouth, building an audience or followers, collaborating with other bloggers.
It takes time to earn money but it is worth the energy and efforts when it does get start generating income.
You need to have patience and be consistent in what you are doing.
As long as you give value to your readers and your content is of good quality that gives solutions, you will gain traffic gradually.
To Sum Up
If you look around or ask someone, mostly blogging has been the number one recommendation by many people and entrepreneurs to earn passive income.
Sometimes, they made it sound like it’s so simple and easy! But it is not that easy!
I don’t mean in anyways try to discourage you, but I want to tell you again that there is a lot of hard work involved during the initial stages of blogging – at least for the first three months.
By then, your knowledge will increase and you will understand many things and it will be much easier to manage as you continue on persistently.
And if you are not prepared to face this journey and lose heart easily, all your efforts will be wasted and you won’t reach anywhere because you need to be consistent.
Blogging is still and will be a lucrative opportunity for anyone who is willing to put in the time, passion, energy, research to create a good and valuable website.
Though it takes time to build, once things are set, it has the potential to generate such an enormous passive income consistently for years to come without you having to do much.
