As a teenager, you may be having an ample amount of free time that you can utilize to make money from your home or in your neighborhood online or offline.
While many teenagers are privileged to be provided with anything they want and like from their parents, many others also have to face numerous struggles in meeting their basic needs.
You can very well make money even as a teenager. In fact, working your ways to earn some amount of money at a younger age will teach you the basic principles of money and how to manage your finances in the years to come. It’s hands-on practical management that cannot be taught effectively in theory.
Your willingness to look for ways to make money is the required drive that can lead you to accumulate wealth for your life.
There may be various reasons why you want to make money in your teen.
Some of the reasons maybe you are not comfortable asking your parents every time you need to buy something or the other and you want to be at least able to have some money without asking for entertainment purpose, going out and chilling with friends, buy those designer clothes, gadgets, etc.
Or you want to save money for the future, for your college, to move out, pursue your passion, start a small business of your own, or want to be independent.
Money won’t be the issue if you are willing to look for ways, give what it takes to earn some amount of money to cover your own expenses and pocket money instead of asking your parents.
Whatever your reasons may be, even if you have no idea or have never earned any money before, here are some of the ways you can make money as a teenager.
Some may require more effort while some may be done effortlessly and in the long run, it will, in turn, build your confidence and it can even give you creative ideas to start your own business without investing money.
For your easy understanding, let’s divide the ways you can earn money as a teenager into Three main categories:
- If you have no educational background
- If you have a specific skill
- If you have a good internet connection
1. If You Have No Educational Background
Do not worry or lose heart if you have no educational background.
Many people who are rich and wealthy weren’t necessarily coming from a sound educational background.
One thing that literally gives me a good assurance is that Money Doesn’t Have An Owner.
Money goes to anyone who works for it and deserves it, though the ways to earn money are different according to individuals and the efforts put into it!
So, everyone including you has the opportunity to earn money.
And please keep in mind that all countries have a Child Labor Law that children who are under 14 or 16 years of age are prohibited to work in an establishment.
While some countries keep it below 14 years of age, some keep it at 16 years. It depends on the laws set in your particular country or place.
Now, if you have no educational background, here are some practical ways you can make money as a teenager.
1. Work As A Newspaper Hawker
When I was around 16 years old, I distributed newspapers to our locality for which I was paid 2% commission per subscriber.
It’s not a lot of money, but good money for a teenager at my age as there is no strenuous manual work.
All I have to do is riding my bicycle around as I delivered the newspaper to every doorstep. And it hardly takes an hour – depending on your locality. And it’s a good exercise too.
You can look out for any vacancy in your locality to work as a news hawker.
2. Work As An Errand Boy
You can work as a delivery guy for local general shops, grocery shops, etc.
Generally, the shop owner was not able to meet the demands of their customers for home delivery.
You try out by approaching those shop owners. I am positive you will get a handful if you are living in a well-populated locality.
Even if it’s not populated, you can approach the shop owner with the idea of helping to expand his business by hiring you to deliver items to every doorstep so that he will be able to take great advantage of his competitors.
This might be a bit tiresome, however, it’s like you get paid for doing something that doesn’t require heavy manual work.
3. Work At Construction Site
If you are of legal age, you can work at construction sites where most people are paid on a daily basis.
The construction sites may be a house, dam, road, anything that requires heavy manpower.
This requires strenuous work. I have tried my hands with these brick-and-mortals businesses and it’s not easy at all. But, it’s better than doing nothing at all.
4. Work As A Hotel Boy/Girl
You can go on the lookout for a local restaurant or hotel and offer your service to work as a hotel boy/girl (waiter).
To be honest, you will be facing discrimination from people who feels they are more privileged than you.
This discrimination thing is common everywhere, you can blame it on human nature.
Not to discourage you, but you might have seen it too if you happened to dine in any restaurant or hotel.
So, why am I saying all these?
I mean to say, if you are fine with facing all these, then you can work in this setup until you save some amount of money at the same time keep looking for a better one that pays you well.
You will be able to get lunch or dinner free from the hotel too if the owner is good.
5. Work At A Printing Press
Running a printing press needs manpower to manage the following:
- Arrange the pages on which materials can be printed.
- Determine the quantities to be printed, paper specifications, colors, and special printing instructions.
- Feed the paper through press cylinders.
- Adjusting the equipment controls.
- Inspecting random sample print to identify any needed adjustments.
- Collect pages.
- Bind new books, using hand tools such as bone folders, knives, hammers, or brass binding tools.
- Cut material to specified dimensions, fitting and gluing material to binder boards by hand or machine.
- Compress sewed or glued sets using hand presses or smashing machines.
If you can convince someone that you will be a good hand, then you mind end up having a job that pays you decent enough.
6. Delivering Fast-food At Home
Like running errands in a grocery store or general store, you can become a home delivery boy for your local hotel or restaurant.
Regardless of the prevalence of Covid-19, the food industry is booming as food is one of the basic needs of the universe to survive.
People will continue to order food online or offline.
If you are not a good cook or have not interested in preparing meals, you can work as a delivery boy.
Try to make good rapport with your customers who know maybe one day they might come to your use.
Now, don’t get me wrong here. I am not saying that you should maintain a good rapport so that you can benefit in the future. That is a selfish intention.
Anyway, maintain a good rapport with other people is always good.
7. Work As A Handyman
You can work as a handyman in an automobile repairing shop or help with any transportation business, like in local buses or anything like that.
You might not earn much but if you have a great interest in automobiles, there is ample room to learn the mechanics.
You can later have your own mechanic shop if you find it sustainable.
8. Do Carpentry Work
There is a great demand for carpenter work especially if you are greatly skilled.
Skilled with good reputation carpenters earned a good amount of money.
Even if you have no idea, you can start out by helping out a carpenter and learn the skill well.
You don’t need to be educated to learn those skills. All you need is your brain and the skill.
Or if you want to self-teach yourself, here is Ted’s Woodworking which is the best selling carpentry guide in the world.
9. Offer To Baby Sit
You can offer to babysit your neighbors’ kids in your locality.
Or you can register at babysitter websites if you have a friend or someone who can get you register at those sites like Helpr-app.com instead of waiting for someone to approach you, that might take forever.
All you have to do is looking after the kid while the parents are gone.
It actually depends on the demand of the parents.
As many parents started working, there is the need for a nanny or someone trustworthy to look after the kids while both the parents are gone for work.
Of course, you won’t earn much still, it’s much better than doing nothing and just passing or wasting your precious time. With this, it’s like you will be passing your time at the same time earn some money while doing so!
10. Offer To Walk Dogs
This job is for you if you love dogs.
You can offer your service to dog walk for other people.
Many people who are busy and do not have time to walk their dogs are looking for someone to do it for them.
It may be hard to find at first, but you can ask someone to search for you on the internet and contact those owners.
11. Work As A Cable Guy
Nowadays, almost every home has a television which requires cables to run. And it’s not like once the cable is connected, the work is done. It’s much more demanding than that.
There is a constant need for monitoring, fixing the damaged cables due to natural causes like rain or wind, cables stolen by thieves, normal wear and tear, etc.
You can reach out to those cable providers and offer to work as a cable guy for your locality.
The same can be said with internet providers too.
12. Start Home-made Craft
If you have interest and have the skill, you can make homemade crafts like chairs, low stools, etc from bamboo, cane, plastic, etc, and sell them with a good margin.
Once you gain a good amount of customer demands, you can hire other people and grow your business.
You can even take your growing business online or ask the help of a developer to build an app for you. This way it can become a full-fledged sustainable business in the future.
13. Offer To Wash Carpets, Blankets
You can offer to wash carpets, blankets, etc as some people prefer hand washing over dry cleaning.
It sure required hard work. Even I preferred to wash my blankets myself and man! I got bodyache whenever I do so as the wet blankets are so heavy.
Of course, you will require a good water supply to do so.
This work can turn out to be lucrative if you know how to scale.
14. Wash Cars
You can wash cars in your locality. Your earnings will depend on the number of cars you wash and how well you do your job.
If your customer is happy, you will automatically get more clients as your customer will recommend you to others too.
15. Work As House Maid
More and more people are looking for someone to clean their house like cleaning the floors, washing the utensils, etc.
And your earnings will depend on how many houses you clean. The pay is also not bad for an hour’s work.
The list is endless. There are hundreds of ways you can do these kinds of work.
What is required is you give the best service and as you gain more trust and appreciation, your popularity will grow and that equals more money!
#2. If You Have A Specific Skill
A skillset is the knowledge, abilities, and experience needed to perform a job.
Skilled labor in any field is in high demand as it is the same as a professional skill.
Most people have at least one skill. And even if you don’t know what skill you have, if you have a passion and interest in something, you can learn and develop your passion into skill.
Common skills that can help you earn money even as a teenager are:
A good photographer is in high demand. And better still if you have a passion for taking unique photographs, you can sell your images.
I can’t say how much you will earn out of it, but you can make a decent amount of money out of it.
Many companies and people around the world are looking for stock photography to buy.
It’s good if you have a good camera, but you can also use your phone camera if it’s good enough.
You can also make your own business card and took photographs at weddings, parties, functions, and events, etc.
If you can add with making customed frames, albums, etc. This will help your business will grow faster. All you have to do is re-invest the money you earn into expanding your horizon.
Another thing you can do is do a 24×7 photo service like passport-sized photographs.
Once in a while, most people faced this urgent need for photographs for interviews, filling application forms, etc.
What you can do is you can provide your service with an instant print.
It will be tiresome but who knows, you might end up building a business like this. I haven’t seen any service like this yet.
2. Videography & Cinematography
Like taking photographs at weddings, events, functions, and parties, you can do video coverage.
You can even capture some incidents and sell your video footage to news agencies.
You can also make short and valuable films if you have the budget.
Another lucrative thing is to make videos for agencies for advertisement.
The list is endless. You can try out similar ideas.
3. Graphic Design
Graphic designing is something which everybody can’t do.
If you are a graphic designer, you can offer your service for things like making logos for companies and agencies.
You can design for T-Shirts and use those Print-On-Demand (POD) sites like Printful, Printify, Amazon Merch, RedBubble, TeeSpring.
No, you need not spend any money by using those platforms. They are free.
The standard size of design accepted by Amazon is 4500 x 5400 px, 300 DPI (Resolution) in a PNG format.
You can use the same format for all those POD sites.
As long as your design is good and unique, you have a good chance to make a living out of it.
4. Abstract Art
Another way you can make money is, Creating Abstract Art.
Abstract Art is an artwork that does not show people or things as they really look, but which shows the artist’s feelings about them.
If you love painting, you can try your hand at creating abstract art, that can even make you thousands of dollars if someone finds it really interesting.
5. Maintenance And Repair
By maintaining and repair work it can be anything you can think of from home furniture to gadgets, electronics, automobiles, plumbing works, etc.
You can even start your own repair shop for computers, mobile phones, any mechanic work, home interiors, and much more. You think about it, you will have the idea.
If you find it scalable and there is room for growth, you can start your own team and expand gradually. You know what I am talking about.
6. Creative Writing
This is for those who love to write.
Trying to write something up when you don’t have the slightest idea is really tough and it’s not everybody’s cup of tea either.
However, if you love reading and writing or if it’s your hobby, why not make money by doing something that you love to do anyway?
You can write stories, novels, whatever you want. You can create ebooks and sell them on platforms like Amazon, Gumroad.
Who knows, you would be the next JK Rowling or Best Seller Author until you try?
So, start writing now.
And here is a guide on how to create your first ebook if you want to have an idea.
Computer programmers design, develop and test software that meets the needs of their clients by leveraging their expertise to ensure the software is developed in accordance with industry standards and best practices in performance, reliability, and security writing code using a variety of languages, including Python, C++, and Java, that a computer can read.
If you are eyeing big and reputed brands, then there is very little opportunity to land the job as you will be competing with more successful programmers.
What you can do as a programmer is that you can reach out to smaller agencies and small business owners who want to expand their business.
8. Web Development
Web developers have many specialties other than creating websites which is just a small part of it.
If you are a web developer, you can offer your expertise by creating websites, finding online solutions, maintaining securities, and testing web-based applications.
As you are young, it might be hard to convince big companies, however, you can directly approach smaller companies or agencies with a handful of your work to showcase that you are the right person they should hire.
If you are really good at it, you can land up in a reputed brand.
9. App Developer
Due to the increasing modernization and the menace of the Covid-19, more and more businesses are turning into more sophisticated and user-friendly ways to woo their customers.
As an app developer, you create a sample app for the company you want to work with and if they are impressed with your work, you will be making thousands of dollars.
You have to put a little hard work upfront. And don’t lose heart if you are not hired.
You can approach another company with the same sample but the detail changed.
Many people do not want to do this. So, if you dare to do something different, you have a greater advantage over your competitors.
Every home whether it’s a small one has at least one or two pieces of furniture.
So, you can imagine the high demand for good carpentry work.
If you have the interest but have no idea, you can work under a carpenter and learn the skill.
Or you can self-taught yourself with this Woodworking book which has more than 1500 designs. This book is the most popular woodworking guide in the world.
Then open your own carpentry shop with a partner or two.
Focus on customer satisfaction and give top-notch products. Your popularity will grow which will result in more demands.
And before you realize it, your business will boom.
If you think doing carpentry work is for those non-educated background people (and that is actually what we often see in society), then you might be wrong.
If you have studies Physics during your high school days, then it might come in handy in measurement and calculations.
11. Home Decoration or Event Decoration
Many people make a living by doing home decoration, interior designing, event decorations, and so on.
As long as the human race is there, there will always be functions like birthday parties, events, weddings, to name a few.
If you have a creative mind and are interested you can start looking at these verticals to make a living.
You might not be perfect at the start, nobody is. But, with time, you will learn many things and you will become more efficient.
12. Fashion And Tailoring
Fashion and tailoring is another evergreen niche that will continue as long as people are living on this earth.
Fashion designing is a skill that is closely related to tailoring and knitting by which a designer makes his or her creation into a reality and for others to see.
The population is increasing and all the more in demand for clothing increases.
The competition is high and you might struggle in the beginning. Well, everybody struggles at the start of their business.
If you have creativity and an artistic mind, you can wet your feet with this.
Nobody wants to were something that doesn’t make them look good and comfortable.
Focus on the need and demands of your customers and you will be able to scale easily.
You can also start a side business by making accessories and anything related to it.
13. Language Translator
Some people have the privilege of mastering different languages other than their native language.
All the more to your advantage if you are a native English speaker. There are lots of opportunities for online tutors or language translators.
You have to clear the test put up by the websites to determine whether you are suitable or not.
Once you clear the test, you may start earning per hour.
14. Music Instructor
Music is kind of the sound of the universe.
I once read research on music that states that the human DNA contains music!
Everybody loves music. If you happened to be a musician, you can take music classes or teach music online.
Music also soothes the mind, soul, and body. Being a musician myself and married to a musician, I can’t imagine life without music!
Many parents are looking out for music teachers for their kids.
And when someone is busy or engrossed in something constructive, the tendency of going into bad habits or drugs also decreases in society.
So, music is one of those time killers that can make a significant change in the life of many people of all ages.
When you play any musical instrument, 2 hours is like nothing. You know what I mean.
I always remembered the day I got my synthesizer – my friends thought I am crazy because I spend the whole day and night playing it and not getting bored. 🙂
15. Sound Service Or Operator
Attending a function or event where there is a lack of a good sound system or operator is such an earache!
This service requires manpower if you are looking for future growth.
Apart from manpower, having your own instruments will give you more profits in the long run.
The downside is that you need to invest quite a lot of money into it first.
But then it’s a good investment because you buy them once and use them multiple times. These things are not like you use them once and got damaged! You see the point here!
If you have the skill and money, how long are you going to think?
People with certain talents and abilities know each other well in the particular community so even if you don’t have the instruments, you sure know someone who can afford to have the same interest as you, right?
So, go ahead and take this giant step. It’s now or never.
The same is with DJing. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea.
If you have this creativity and have the interest, learn more the skill to master it and offer your talent in exchange for money.
17. Lighting Services
With the increasing fashion and technology, the need for good lighting services cannot be overlooked.
Photography, video footage, or events without proper lighting is a no-no nowadays.
You can start your own lighting services with your friends or family members if they are willing. You can run this as a family business.
This is also a business that requires heavy investment to start. But once it took off, you can scale.
18. Stand up Comedian
If you always love the humor side of life and known for making other people laugh, you can as well become a stand-up comedian.
The opportunity to be famous or make a lot of money out of it is limited in developing countries.
However, if you are in one of those developed countries like the US, UK, Australia, Germany, etc why not try it out?
